Wow, what a crazy month!  Between benchmark testing, ITBS, and conferences, we've had a lot to do!  I really enjoyed meeting with all of you during conference week.  Thanks so much for your involvement in your child's education.  Here's a look at what we're doing the next could of weeks.

Math –The past two weeks we learned about different types of graphs and when to use them, mean, median, mode, and range.  We will begin our unit on fractions by the end of this week.  The first two weeks of this unit will be about understanding what a fraction is, converting fractions to decimals, simplifying fractions, and equivalent fractions.  Remember that we have a quiz every Friday and your child should be bringing home their math journal to study.  *Check out the new math tab for some fun links and info!*

Social Studies- We have covered the major events and people of the Civil War and will be moving on to Reconstruction next week.  Ask your child about some of the major people from the War.  They should be able to identify them and tell you what their roll was during the Civil War.

Everybody has adjusted really well to our new class format!  I've enjoyed getting to know all of the new students that were added to our class.

Math – The past two weeks we have been working on modeling the multiplication and division of decimals.  Your child should be able to write a multiplication sentence or division sentence when given a model.  They should also be able to solve multiplication and division problems with decimals using the traditional algorithm.  Next week we will be moving on to percents and algebraic expressions. Remember that we have a quiz every Friday and your child should be bringing home their math journal to study.

Social Studies- This week we learned about Uncle Tom's Cabin  by Harriett Beecher Stowe and John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry.  We discussed how both of these events contributed to tensions between the north and the south.  Next week we will be learning about the major battles of the Civil War.

August 26

We have some big changes coming next week.  As you know, my class has been split in half.  some will stay with my in my homeroom and others are going to Mrs. Luke, our new fifth grade teacher.  I will teach math and social studies to our homeroom in the first half of the day, then they will go to Mrs. Luke for Reading/Language Arts and Science.  This is a really exciting opportunity as the students will be able to get a taste of what middle school will be like next year and we will have smaller classes for everyone!  Please let me know if you have any questions about this.

Math – so far this year we have learned about place value, decimals, divisibility, factors, multiples, and prime and composite numbers.  This week and next week we will be focusing on multiplying decimals.  They should be able to create models of the multiplication problems as well as solve by the traditional algorithm.  Make sure to check your child's math journal to see what we learned each day.  There will be a quiz each Friday.

Social Studies-  We are beginning our unit on the Civil War this week.  This will take us up to the end of the nine weeks as we will discuss the causes of the war, major battles and campaigns during the war, significant people, and amendment changes after the war.

I can’t believe we’re already through two weeks of school!  Everybody has been working hard and doing a great job!  Here’s a look at what we’ve been up to the past two weeks:

Math – Last week we reviewed place value and value of whole numbers and decimals.  This week we learned how to compare and order decimals and divisibility rules.  We will have a math quiz this Friday over these concepts.  Students will be expected to identify the place and value of a digit, write whole numbers and decimals in standard, word, and expanded form, order decimals, and use the divisibility rules for 2, 3, 5, and 10.  Your child should be bringing home their math journals each day to study and review the day’s skills.

Reading/Language Arts – We have been working on story elements, nouns, and beginning our first writing piece.  We also had our Media Center orientation this week.  Your child should have a book (or two) that they are reading at home and at school.  Part of their daily homework is to read at least 30 minutes every night.  We will finish up the prewriting stage of our personal narratives this week and begin writing the first drafts next week.

Social Studies – This week we learned about the different between rights and responsibilities, the Bill of Rights, and due process.  We will be moving on to Science next week.
